Putin, Iranian counterpart hold phone call to discuss regional developments
“Vladimir Putin reported on the main results of the Russian-American summit held in Anchorage. Masoud Pezeshkian expressed support for the ongoing diplomatic efforts aimed at a peaceful resolution of the Ukrainian crisis,” the Kremlin’s press service said in a statement.
The discussion took place shortly after Putin’s meeting with US President Donald Trump at a military base in Anchorage, where both leaders expressed willingness to work toward ending the conflict in Ukraine.
During the call, Pezeshkian reiterated Iran’s position on its nuclear program, stating that “Tehran will not seek to create nuclear weapons,” and thanked Putin for Russia’s stance on the matter.
The leaders also explored bilateral cooperation, with a focus on the energy sector. Pezeshkian’s office highlighted topics such as the ongoing construction of the Bushehr Nuclear Power Plant and Russia’s recent fuel replacement in the operating reactor.
Putin and Pezeshkian agreed to meet in person at the upcoming Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit in China, reaffirming their commitment to strengthen cooperation across multiple areas.
They also exchanged perspectives on tensions in the South Caucasus region, though specific details were not disclosed.
The Kremlin noted that both leaders stressed the importance of maintaining coordination on regional and international matters.
On August 15, Putin and Trump held a landmark summit in Alaska, where they committed to achieving “results” and hinted at potential strategies to resolve the war in Ukraine.
